The standard encoding for GSM messages is the 7-bit default alphabet that has a maximum of 160 characters. exceeding 160 characters will require a 2nd message. The recipients will see this as 1 long message on their handset.
Messages longer than 160 characters are refered as multi-part messages as they contain multiple messages (or multiple-parts).For long messages the total SMS limit is 153 characters per ‘part’ as the 7 characters are used up by headers which denote which part of the message is being sent (e.g. Part 1 of 2).
